Welty’s career brought about numerous awards and honors including the Pulitzer Prize (1973), The Presidential Medal of Freedom (1980), The National Medal of Arts (1986), National Women’s Hall of Fame (2000) along with many other prestigious recognitions and awards. In 1998, Eudora Welty became the first living author to have her works published by LOA. The LOA is a non-profit organization that works to preserve the nation’s cultural heritage by publishing America’s best and most significant writings. It is this distinctive writing style that caught the attention of the Library of America (LOA). Welty’s unique writing style allows the reader to experience the deep culture and heritage through her southern-based characters. Welty’s career included numerous short stories along with several novels. Her first novel was published 6 years later. Welty attended the Mississippi State College for Women before pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin.Īt the age of 27, Welty had her first two short stories published in a magazine. She described her earliest childhood memories as listening to the voices of her parents as they read aloud their favorite books to one another. Welty’s appreciation for literature was discovered at an early age.
